Cosmic Cavern - Arkansas

View of the fault line running across the roof

Following our visit to Eureka Springs we headed north and on the way back to Springfield called in at Cosmic Cavern. This is a limestone cave system and on the short tour saw loads of stalactites and stalagmite formations as well as flow stone and soda straws. One of the soda straws has been measured as a whopping 9 feet long. A soda straw is a hollow mineral tube and as long as water flows through the tube the straw will lengthen, as soon a water stops the end solidifies. They are very fragile forms and can easily be broken off.

We saw a couple of the underground lakes which have both blind fish as well as introduced trout species. Apparently even with modern equipment the depths of these lakes have still to be ascertained. They have had cave divers explore other passages and found in 1993 a cave that was full of stalactites and stalagmites, this was called "Silent Splendour". One gets a view into the cave but is not allowed to enter.

According to legend Bonnie and Clyde were in the area in the early 1930's passing by on their way to the local town of Berryville where they released a hostage taken in Missouri. Ginger said the cave was up for sale so anybody with $175,000 to spare plus monies for upgrades - needed it, here's your chance for a little project for retirement.

A good tour and we had a very knowledgeable tour guide who kept the kids amused and delivered plenty of information in an easily understandable way.

Well it is time to head back to the ranch now.
